LEGIONNAIRES
FOR GOD AND COUNTRY
WHY WE JOIN
Veterans may choose to become members of the American Legion for various reasons. Firstly, the American
Legion provides a sense of camaraderie and support among fellow veterans, fostering a strong community of
individuals who have shared experiences and understand the challenges faced after military service. Secondly,
the organization offers valuable resources and assistance in areas such as healthcare, employment, education,
and housing. Lastly, the American Legion allows veterans to have a voice in advocating for veterans' rights
and issues, enabling them to actively contribute to the betterment of their community and country.
WELCOME TO POST 116
The oldest organization of citizens chartered in Fuquay Springs is the North Carolina American Legion Post 116. Their charter of June 26, 1922 lists 15 members. The museum has located descendants and family members of 10 of these gentlemen known to have connections to our area today. The other five were veterans of World War I who resided in the area at time.

THE BEALE JOHNSON HOUSE
According to research of deeds, the American Legion under Commander W.S. Cozart sold the property to J.C. Tilley, Adjutant (Secretary) on March 18, 1946. Post 116 then purchased the property known as the Beale Johnson House and the Old Mill Farms from the State Board of Education of North Carolina on April 1, 1949.
JOHNSON POND I
It was in 1941 that the property the Legion now occupies was deeded by the Federal Government to the North Carolina State Board of Education. The Federal Government came into possession of the property during the great depression years when the owners could no longer pay their taxes. Then, in 1949, The Board of Education after determining that it was not practical for The Board to use the land for the purposes for which it was granted, deeded the property to the Fuquay Springs American Legion Post 116. As a result The Post owns the 13 acre tract of land on Johnson's Pond Road and 20 Acre Pond. The Post rechartered on January 27th 1967 as American Legion Post 116 of Fuquay-Varina.

JOHNSON POND II
In 2008, an aesthetically unassuming yet highly functional modernized building was added to our grounds. While its exterior may appear plain, rest assured that its interior is equipped with impressive capabilities. Within this building, we take pride in boasting a spacious Rec Room (Canteen) and a large meeting space that accommodates a diverse range of events, from elegant weddings to lively chili cook-offs, captivating live band performances, heartwarming daddy-daughter dances, and so much more!
Today, we are proud to have the largest membership in the state, a testament to the welcoming and vibrant community we have fostered. Furthermore, we have the distinction of initiating the first "Cruisers" divisions within the esteemed American Legion program, nationally recognized for our commitment to providing exceptional experiences for our veterans.
